A smelly carpet can make even the cleanest room unpleasant. Whether the smell is caused by lack of air circulation, food spills, mold, or by pets relieving themselves on your precious carpet, taking the smell out must be a priority.

I have written here the most easy and effective “do it yourself” methods to remove bad odors, hopefully this tip will save you calling a professional cleaning service.

The simplest odor remover that is cheap and highly effective is Baking soda. Baking soda may have been designed for a different purpose than cleaning carpets, but the truth is that it’s very efficient in taking out bad smells completely. You can also use baking soda in other circumstances such as bad odor in your car, shoes, or even cupboards.

You should sprinkle baking soda on the carpet (if it’s a pet stain put some on the stain directly) and let it sit on the carpet for as long as possible (anywhere from a few hours up to a couple of days).

Once the baking soda has removed the odor you should sweep the carpet to get most of the baking soda off (if it is a rug just give it a shake outside). Once you got most of it off you can vacuum the leftover baking soda and be left with a fresh odorless carpet. If needed repeat the process again.
