Your poor mattress. If you don’t cover it with some sort of protection, it’s pretty venerable to all sorts of spills, stains, germs and critters. Protect your health and safety, and that of your mattress, by following a couple of easy, DIY mattress maintenance steps.

  • Vacuum your mattress, front and back, at least once a month. This removes accumulated dust and dirt and keeps dust mites at bay. Sprinkle some baking soda all over and let stand 10 minutes before vacuuming to deodorize your entire mattress.
  • Flip and turn your mattress every other month, if possible. Some mattress have a pillow top or other feature that doesn’t allow flipping, so check your mattress before attempting to flip.
  • In the case of a spill in your mattress, absorb the liquids as quickly as possible with a dry, clean towel.
  • In the case of stains, first read any cleaning instructions on the mattress. As a general rule of thumb, always start with the gentlest cleaning product as possible. Look for recipes for natural stain removal that use vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. And, remember, the sooner you treat the stain, the less likely it will set in.
  • Always allow your mattress to dry completely before putting sheets on top and making your bed.
  • Change and wash your bedding in hot water once a week to discourage dust mites.
