We all know that horrible, gut wrenching panic as you watch something messy fall onto your carpet or sofa. Although your first instinct is to run over and wipe up the mess with the closest cloth you can find, you may wind up causing more harm than good. A few quick tips will help you handle even the messiest situations with ease.

  • Do use a spoon or knife to scoop up excess spillage, anything you can get off the surface of the fabric without rubbing will help.
  • Don’t rub or scrub. It seems like a good idea at first but you are actually rubbing the stain deeper into the material, making it more likely to stay.
  • Do gently blot the area with a clean, white towel.
  • Don’t dump any cleaning product on the stain without testing it first. Be sure to test the cleaner on an out of the way patch of fabric, or you may wind up with a giant bleach stain in the middle of your carpet!
  • Do treat your stain from the outside in. Apply all stain removers or water to the outside of a stain, and then work your way in. This keeps the stain contained. If you put any liquid in the middle of the stain, it will cause the stain to spread outwards.

Remember, if you are really stuck, you can always call the professionals!
